In between cramming for never-ending tests, going out with your classmates and campaigning for the student union, you still need to keep fit. The good news is, you don't have to do that last bit all by yourself. Plenty of smartwatches can stand in for your mom, reminding you to go take a walk after you've sat in front of your computer for too long. There's also gear that you can take with you on your runs to make the grueling exercise more tolerable. In curating this list, we thought not only about what could make your workouts more fun and productive, but also devices and services that help you stay on top of your fitness regimen. These include apps that help manage your diet or exercise plans, so you don't have to splurge on a whole new gadget. Some options are even free. Here's what we recommend.
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active hands-on: Ready for the gym
Samsung's updated watch is a stripped-down version of what came before it. Amid all the four (four?!) new phones Samsung paraded out at its Unpacked event, the Galaxy Watch Active is Samsung's newest smartwatch, with a design that feels less aggressive, not to mention less chunky.
Samsung's Galaxy Watch Golf Edition puts a caddie on your wrist
There are plenty of wearables that track your golf swing or help you choose the right club (Garmin has two, for example), but none of them are made by Samsung. Which is why the arrival of a Galaxy Watch Golf Edition smartwatch is exciting news -- or at least it would be if it actually packed some true golf-centric software upgrades under the hood. Instead, Samsung has put out a regular Galaxy Watch with a pre-installed Smart Caddie app -- much like the stunt it pulled with the Gear S3. Oh, and it's only available in South Korea.
Two days with the Galaxy Watch: Bezels, Bixby and stress tests
Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Watch officially went on sale today, but here's the thing: we've fully reviewed the former and only just received the latter. (Well, 48 hours ago, to be precise.) As a result, we're still working on our full Galaxy Watch review, which should drop sometime next week. But, the first two days with the Galaxy Watch have already revealed a lot about how well Samsung's updated wearable experience works.
You'll have to pay $50 more for Samsung's LTE Galaxy Watch
Samsung just outlined how much it will cost you to get an LTE version of the Galaxy Watch and leave your phone at home. The company's product pages show that you'll be paying a $50 premium for the T-Mobile-oriented cellular version arriving at launch, starting at $380 for the 42mm model and climbing to $400 for the chunky 46mm edition. For context, the LTE-equipped Apple Watch Series starts at $400 for a 38mm model and $430 for 42mm wristwear.
Watch Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 event in 12 minutes
Samsung wasn't holding back at its Unpacked event. The centerpiece was clearly the Galaxy Note 9, but it had a veritable onslaught of announcements beyond that. Samsung Galaxy Watch hands-on: Steady progress but few thrills
We knew Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 was coming, but the new Galaxy Watch was a bit more of a surprise. (Well, as much a surprise as a device Samsung leaked on its own website can be.) The crowds have finally started to dissipate here at Samsung Unpacked, so we snagged a few Galaxy Watches to try on, and there's immediately plenty to like about the wearable. It's light, almost surprisingly so. It runs with a new dual-core Samsung Exynos 9110 chipset, not the same poky Snapdragon Wear 2100 that's been in nearly every Wear OS watch for two years. It has what look like some excellent displays (under weirdo stage lights, anyway). Oh, and it looks pretty nice too. I hear that's important to some people.
Samsung's Galaxy Watch looks like a real watch
Considering Samsung accidentally leaked its new smartwatch on its own website, it's not a surprise that the company announced the Galaxy Watch at its event today. It will come in two sizes: 42mm ($330) and 46mm ($350). The 46mm watch will come in Silver, while the 42mm will be available in Midnight Black and Rose Gold. You can pre-order starting August 10th on Samsung.com; the watches will go on sale on August 24th.
Watch Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 event tomorrow at 11AM ET
Samsung is once again ready to unveil the latest version of its other flagship phone line, the Galaxy Note, and it's making sure everyone can tune in. The company is livestreaming the Galaxy Note 9 launch event on its main website (and most likely the Samsung Mobile YouTube channel) on August 9th at 11AM Eastern. Samsung leaked the upcoming Galaxy Watch on its own website
Samsung has dropped multiple hints that the Galaxy Watch is on the way. If there was any doubt that the likely Gear S3 successor is on the way, however, the company just removed it: CNET and Twitter user @sugabeticme have discovered a product listing for the Galaxy Watch (since pulled) on Samsung's own site. The link took visitors to a dead page, but it showed both an image of the watch and revealed that there would be 42mm and rose gold case options.
Samsung may have an answer to Apple's AirPower wireless charger
Whenever Apple releases its AirPower multi-device charger, it might have some fresh competition. Recently discovered images and listings have revealed Samsung's Wireless Charger Duo, which (as the name implies) could offer fast charging to two devices at once. It wouldn't be as flexible as Apple's device since you'd need to place your devices on specific spots. However, you could top up a phone and the upcoming Galaxy Watch at the same time, or even two phones at once if you're using it as a family charging station.
Tokyoflash's Galaxy: a watch only a nerd could love
It's true. Any decent mother would wonder what on Earth her child was thinking rocking that thing you see above, and even though all those wonderful ladies of the world would be entirely entitled to that curiosity, we can understand the obsession. On its surface, this timepiece and its cryptic display is unquestionably ugly -- even the "stainless steel" band reeks of cereal box quality. But there's just something about those flashy lights that stirs the soul of nerds everywhere, making it seem quite the bargain at $132.85. It's okay, we won't tell mommy.[Via BoingBoing]
